Human chorionic gonadotropin is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone and an agonist at the luteinizing-hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR), the same receptor engaged by luteinizing hormone. In-vitro and preclinical research literature describes receptor binding coupled to Gs-protein/cAMP signaling, driving steroidogenesis in Leydig cells and follicular thecal and granulosa cells. Its mechanism is characterized at the receptor and gonadal-cell level.
