Overview
KPV is the tripeptide lysyl-prolyl-valine (Lys-Pro-Val) corresponding to the C-terminal residues 11–13 of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It reproduces the C-terminal message sequence of the parent hormone while lacking the core melanocortin-receptor pharmacophore responsible for pigmentary signaling. The tripeptide is water-soluble and produced synthetically for research use. It is studied as a reference peptide for anti-inflammatory signaling in epithelial and immune cell systems.
Mechanism as studied
The research literature characterizes KPV primarily as a modulator of pro-inflammatory transcription. In cultured epithelial and immune cells, exposure is associated with attenuated activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and reduced downstream pro-inflammatory cytokine transcription. Uptake through the peptide transporter PepT1 (SLC15A1) has been described as one route by which the tripeptide reaches intracellular targets in enterocytes and immune cells. These endpoints are documented at the molecular and cellular level, independent of pigmentary melanocortin signaling.
